CHART

August 2003

1) DJ Gregory - "Elle" (Faya Combo)

The man on form comes up with a future classic. It's been mentioned by some in the same breath as "Night Of The Jaguar" and I wouldn't argue. Due for a higher profile release on Defective soon.

2) Naked Music Presents - "The Trentemoller EP" (Naked Music)

Apparently this is the producers first ever release and if that's the case then this is one hell of a way to kickstart his career. Two classy sounding tracks here, very smooth, lots of ideas and overall just a real pleasure to listen too.

3) JT Donaldson - "My Belief" (Icon)

This guy seems to be releasing tracks all over the place lately and this is a fine example of why he's hot property. The Rhodes sounds great, the bass is nice and chunky and the spoken vocal sits perfectly over the top.

4) H Foundation - "Tonight (King Britt's Sexy mix)" (Soma)

It's the seductive melody gliding over the vocals that really hits the spot for me in this stripped down remix from King Britt. Would have been nice to have an alternative mix with stronger drums though.

5) Thomas Buchnar - "Jolly Jumper (Alps Mix)" (Exun)

Firstly ignore the name, secondly flip immediately over to the Alps mix straight away - the 'club mix' is a bit dodgy. Despite the B side being called the 'Alps mix' this is actually a very warm sounding summertime track that's bound to put a smile on your face.

6) Phonogenic "Togetha EP" (2020 Vision)

Quite a techno sounding release from 2020 and very good it is too. "Togetha" is definitely the pick of the EP for me mainly thanks to the distinctive bassline and rhythmic vocal hook.

7) Ross Couch - "In The Night / Big Business" (Blaktrax)

My first release for a few months is due out on the 18th August on Shaboom's sister label Blaktrax. Pete Tong's played it from a test press on The Essential Selection and it's currently sitting at No.24 in the Hype chart so I can't complain!

8) DBug - "So Warm" (Sub Rossa)

Second release for Sub Rossa and their definitely onto something. Deep, techy chords and a driving rhythm make for a very playable slice of summer-time house.

9) Ross Couch - "Hearts And Minds" (Red Melon)

Another track from "The Deep End EP" due in the next few months on Dano's west coast label.

10) Lounge Conjunction - "Give" (Airtight)

A welcome return for Airtight and a good way to kick things off again with these two smooth tracks.

July 2003

I've just recently made a changeover from DJing techno to house, here's what's caught my ear this month...

1. Ron Trent presents AFRICAN BLUES featuring MORGANA - "Yemoya" (Distance)

Simply a beautiful record. It's not going to set the dancefloor alight but it's one of the most
soulful tracks you'll hear all year. Timeless.

2. John Ciafone - "Everyday (DJ Gregory rmx)" (Boombastic)

DJ Gregory is definitely one of the producers of the moment and this is a great remix, the
chords are fantastic.

3. DEL 5 - "Musicman" (End Recordings)

The work of Majik Johnstone and Ben Davis, the geezers behind the Shaboom and Blaktrax, this
is another great release for Mr C's label. Liked it when I first heard it and it's grown
on me even more since then.

4. Kei Kohora - "Midnight Express (Richley & Rivera rmx 1)" (Silly Spider)

Good remix brings out the best in this track.

5. Microlife - "The Lowlands" (Treibstoff)

Great track from a cool label.

6. Ross Couch - "On And On" (Kinky Vinyl)

The latest track i've had signed along with "Feel The Music".

7. Flow - "Here 4 U EP" (Sub Rossa)

Good start for Urban Torque's new sister label. 4 tracks on here of which the A1 'Kirby' is
the standout.

8. Ross Couch - "La Musica" (Red Melon)

My pick from "The Deep End E.P" due out soon on Red Melon.

9. Romanthony - "Floorpiece" (Glasgow Underground)

Wallflowers beware.

10. Double X - "Renounce" (Kanzleramt)

A few months ago I charted "Charis" from this same E.P which was more in a techno style but
this deep/techy groover is a real winner too.
